Tell us a little about your background and role at the lab
In my seven-plus years at Berkeley Lab, I’ve been fortunate to play a key role in several impactful projects to support modernizing Berkeley Lab. Currently, I hold the position of Deactivation and Demolition Department Head and Project Director for two critical projects: the Seismic Safety & Modernization (SSM) New Facility and the Transit Hub Utilities projects. My journey at Berkeley Lab began with overseeing environmental cleanup efforts within the EHS Division for the Old Town Demolition Project. I later transitioned to what is now known as PIMD, where I played a crucial role in establishing the Deactivation and Demolition Department. In this role I currently lead a variety of initiatives, including deactivation and demolition projects, as well as developing a waste disposition plan for the ALS Upgrade.
What does teamwork mean to you and why is it important?
Teamwork, to me, is more than just the sum of individual efforts. It is the synergy created when individuals come together leveraging their diverse skills and experiences towards a shared goal. True teamwork thrives on mutual support, trust, and respect among team members. When a team operates at its best, it generates a collective effect that surpasses the contributions of each individual. This synergy enables teams to tackle challenges more effectively, innovate, and achieve outcomes that wouldn’t be possible through individual efforts alone.
What is an example of a time when teamwork contributed to the success of a project?
A prime example of successful teamwork occurred during the Old Town Demolition Project. After LBNL parted ways with the original contractor, our team quickly regrouped and devised a phased plan to prioritize and complete the remaining scope. This approach allowed the project team to build confidence with Senior Lab Management and DOE as we completed each phase of work. Throughout the project, there was a strong sense of mutual support, trust, and respect among team members, contributing to the team’s synergy. This collaborative environment was pivotal in turning around the project and making it a success.
What are some strategies you have found that help mitigate challenges or differences of opinion that may come up to ensure the success of a project?
Effectively leading a team involves navigating challenges and differences of opinion among team members, including project stakeholders. Strategies include fostering open communication, setting & aligning clear goals, holding regular meetings, embracing diversity, and having a structured conflict resolution process. By implementing these strategies, leaders can foster collaboration and alignment, ultimately ensuring the success of the project.
Any closing thoughts?
I want to emphasize the importance of creating an environment of trust, mutual respect, and support within teams. When each member feels valued and empowered to contribute their best, it fosters cohesion and resilience within teams.
