LBNL Colleagues-
Todd Hancock, Director of the Projects & Infrastructure Modernization Division, has decided to leave Berkeley Lab on May 3. Todd joined the Lab three and a half years ago to lead a rapidly growing construction portfolio that addresses critically needed infrastructure upgrades as well as the development of new facilities to support our research mission.
Todd’s influence at the Lab will be seen for decades through his leadership of the Lab’s construction projects. PIMD has two major 413.3B projects underway: the Safety & Seismic Modernization Project and Transit Hub, which will provide dining and gathering spaces at the Lab, and BioEPIC, the home to integrated research of biological and environmental processes. He has also led critical upgrades to the Lab’s infrastructure. LAMP, the Linear Asset Modernization Project, is a 10-year project that will upgrade underground electrical and piped utilities. This project will be the foundation for positioning the Lab to continue to reliably deliver on its mission.
As significant as the physical changes at the Lab, Todd has built a professional team of leaders. Todd has brought project professionals to the Lab to ensure the quality and safety of all work. He has emphasized the importance of professional project management, an essential skill set that other Lab areas have started to adopt. He has built a legacy of talented project leaders. This past year, Todd led, developed and instituted the Scientific Equipment Installation team to plan and execute critical scientific equipment installations for our research divisions. This team’s agile approach and partnership with science have enhanced the Lab’s research capabilities by providing a more streamlined process for installing essential research equipment.
I will miss the consultation and guidance Todd has provided to me and his partnership in developing the Lab of the future. Skip Dunham has been the PIMD deputy division director for the last three and a half years and will step into the interim PIM Division Director role while a search is underway for Todd’s replacement. Skip joined the Lab six years ago. He has had an impressive career at the Lab, leading several key projects and initiatives, including the $100 million clean-up of Old Town. Please join me in wishing Todd the best of luck in his future endeavors.
Sincerely,
Michael T. Brandt
