The Seismic Safety & Modernization (SSM) project proposal is a multi-year planning and construction effort intended to address seismic safety issues and emergency response capabilities specifically related to the Cafeteria, Health Services facility, and the Fire House at LBNL.
As proposed, a new 45,000-square-foot building would consolidate health services, conference space, dining facilities, and wellness services. The result would be a more operationally efficient campus for LBNL employees, visitors, and guests.
The project would demolish Building 54 (Cafeteria), vacate Building 26 (EH&S), and create one building to be situated on the current Building 54 site. The project would include seismically upgrading Building 48 (Fire House).
SSM received Critical Decision-1 (CD-1) approval of alternative selection and cost range from DOE in September 2019.
