The Seismic Safety & Modernization (SSM) project proposal is a multi-year planning and construction effort to create a new LBNL Welcome Center that is intended to address seismic safety issues and emergency response capabilities specifically related to the Cafeteria, Health Services facility, and the Fire House at LBNL.
As proposed, a new 46,000-square-foot building would consolidate health services, conference space, dining facilities, and wellness services. The result would be a more operationally efficient campus for LBNL employees, visitors, and guests.

The project would demolish Building 54 (Cafeteria), vacate Building 26 (EH&S), and create one building to be situated on the current Building 54 site. The project would include seismically upgrading Building 48 (Fire House).
SSM received Critical Decision-1 (CD-1) approval of alternative selection and cost range from DOE in September 2019. Final design is in process and the project continues to work with stakeholders to develop a plan to use existing Lab space for temporary occupancy. The project anticipates going through DOE CD-3A (long lead procurement) review in spring 2021, with start of demolition possible in summer of 2021.
