The Old Town Demolition (OTD) project includes the phased removal of buildings and soil remediation to allow for future redevelopment adjacent to the Advanced Light Source (ALS) Building 6. The initial demolition of Old Town area buildings provided the necessary space for Chu Hall (Building 30) and a General Purpose Laboratory (Building 33). Future phases are in planning and development to abate and demolish the remaining buildings within the Old Town area, specifically Buildings 4, 5, 7, 7C, 14, 16 and 16A. Systematic removal of soil, remnant slabs and abandoned utilities will be performed to address any existing subsurface contamination.
After the project received DOE Critical Decision 1 (CD-1, Selection of Alternatives) in October 2013, OTD was divided into several phases with each phase addressing structure demolition, removal of contaminated soils associated with the structures, and stabilization of the affected areas. On-site work began in late 2015 and continues with phases VI and VII. Included in Phase VII work is the organized removal of equipment, installation of temporary utilities, and placement of waste containers from Buildings 7 and 7c. Work in this area is being coordinated with the ALS-U project.
