The Biological & Environmental Program Integration Center (BioEPIC) is a new 73,000 gsf research and office building to be constructed at the Bayview site. BioEPIC is intended to house complementary DOE research programs from the Biosciences Area (BSA) and Earth and Environmental Sciences Area (EESA).
Construction of BioEPIC would allow co-location and integration of these programs in a unique laboratory facility. BioEPIC would leverage existing strengths and emerging technologies to allow significant progress in advancing the understanding of how microbial communities respond to and shape environmental systems, or biomes, a critical DOE mission.
BioEPIC would analyze biomes at a range of laboratory scales from the molecular to the broadly geographic. Co-location of research staff and programs in state-of-the-art BioEPIC space would increase resource efficiencies and enhance scientific program synergies.
Construction is expected to last three years, projected to be from 2021 to 2024. BioEPIC is targeted to achieve a LEED Gold rating.
DOE Critical Decision‑1 (CD‑1) approval of alternative selection and cost range was approved on May 9, 2019. CD-2/3, Approve Performance Baseline/Start of Construction was approved on September 22, 2021. CD-4, Approve Project Completion, is forecast for November 2024.
A NEPA Categorical Exclusion determination was made and Environmental Evaluation Notification form was approved by the DOE in February 2019. The UC Regents approved the CEQA Findings and design in January 2020. Find more information here.
